Reading notes, week 4. Old Monterey

Charles Warren Stoddard's poem: "Old Monterey" was a very enjoyable read to me and one that I can connect to. Being that I love the ocean and go often I am able to paint a vivid picture in my head as I read the text. The way he describes old Monterey and the patterns and of the sea I think has a deeper meaning and connects than just the sea nature. Stoddard says " Of the treasure vast and the glory past" (226 Stoddard) and " The bitter tang of the sea is ours" (227, Stoddard) in these sentences I think the author is creating a relationship between someone and the sea, the way one may feel while near the ocean. The ocean is used as a place to ponder and reflect the way in which the author describes it and because of the detailed visions and connections, a reader may have they are able to connect to the text and author on a deeper level.

  2. Hello Grace,

It is awesome that you were able to choose a reading that you could relate to. I think it is always better to read about something that interests you and you can relate to. The part about being able to paint a picture in your head is pretty cool, and I am sure that made it more interesting to read about. It also was nice that you added the page numbers to your quotes, that makes it easy to go back on and look at if needed. I thought it was good when you said the author had more meaning behind his sentences, such as "The bitter tang of the sea is ours." I agree with you on that, and do think it has something to do with the feeling someone gets around an ocean.
You mentioned that a reader may be able to connect on a deeper level because of the visions and connections. Do you think that is the same if the topic was about a desert instead of the ocean? I think the ocean is a more valuable piece to most peoples lives than the desert, so would that connection change?
What if you chose a reading and you weren't connected to the topic at all? Do you think you could still make those visual connections in your head and feel the meaning of things on a deeper level?

  3. I really enjoyed reading this story as well and I could also connect with it as well. The story creates this certain imagery that is really easy to connect to. I like how you said that you love the ocean so this story really connects to you because I feel the same way. I grew up in the ocean so this story created a nostalgia of being a kid again. Real solid notes!
