Project 1

The relationship between the Setting and character development in the story Coyote Cooks His Daughter written by Jack Hicks is very important. Without one or the other elements developing and moving along as it does in most stories, the plot would not function the way it should. The setting in the story is the reasoning and motives behind the protagonist who is the father coyotes actions which influence his inner being.  The Literature of California book written by Jack Hicks discusses the Indian customs and beliefs that reflect the story of Coyote Cooks His Daughter . According to Jack Hicks, coyote stories were often told because of the broad appeal and shock and surprise they deliver to the reader. The relationship between a character and its setting can be both a good and bad bond until things took a turn for the worse in the story Coyote Cooks His Daughter. The relationship between the setting and character reflect the majority of a bad relationship between two elements in t...

Week 4, project planning, Coyote Cooks his Daughter

I plan to explore the project topic of "Explore the relationship between elements of the selection. For example: how does setting influence character development?". For my project I will use the reading Coyote Cooks his Daughter and I will choose to explore the relationship between Setting and character. I will further analyze how the setting the coyotes live in the impact the actions of the father coyote and I will examine the relationship between those two to elements. The element of setting describes where the story takes place, helping to give readers an image and idea to build background and it helps describe the mood and tone of the story aswell. I will analyze the setting by identifying where the main part of the story takes place, using background information and context clues to do so, then I can look for the mood that is created by the setting which plays a role in setting the tone for the story. The element:characters can be analyzed by determining their different ...

Week 4, Analysis, Old Monterey

The most vivid literary element used in the poem, Old Monterey written by Charles Warren Stoddard I believe would be the setting. The setting in the text takes up the majority of the plot, with Stoddard describing different feelings, emotions, and visions then correlates with the different settings in nature. Without the descriptive words used to describe the setting ‘old Monterey’ in which the author is talking about, the poem would then have no structured plot. I have identified the theme in this poem as, finding the beauty in nature. Finding the beauty in nature can be seen in a few different ways, first being the actual beauty of the different elements of nature and the scenery itself and secondly, the beauty in the different emotional states being in nature can take you to. Throughout the whole story the author refers to different parts of nature and discusses it natural physical beauty “ The wind and wave pour over the rocks that are barren and bony” (227 Stoddard) the descripti...

Reading notes, week 4. Old Monterey

Charles Warren Stoddard's poem: "Old Monterey" was a very enjoyable read to me and one that I can connect to. Being that I love the ocean and go often I am able to paint a vivid picture in my head as I read the text. The way he describes old Monterey and the patterns and of the sea I think has a deeper meaning and connects than just the sea nature. Stoddard says " Of the treasure vast and the glory past" (226 Stoddard) and " The bitter tang of the sea is ours" (227, Stoddard) in these sentences I think the author is creating a relationship between someone and the sea, the way one may feel while near the ocean. The ocean is used as a place to ponder and reflect the way in which the author describes it and because of the detailed visions and connections, a reader may have they are able to connect to the text and author on a deeper level. Stoddard, Charles. Old Monterey. Pg 226-227. 1843-1909

Reading notes, Week 4, From A Frontier Lady

In the text From A Frontier Lady by Sarah Eleanor Royce was a very interesting and inspiring story to read. The character development in this story plays a big role in the plot and moving the story along the way. Sarah Joyce and her family are extremely brave, strong-willed and optimistic staying so in very testing circumstances. Bravery and optimism were shown in the family from the beginning of their journey Joyce stating: “without flinching” and “ I even laughed” (136). In a situation where many would think it would be hard to stay strong and to keep laughing, looking for the light at the end tunnel this family did just that. They did not question and turn back but they kept moving forward thanks to their strong-willed personality traits and her religious background that is discussed in the introduction. This family continued to push forward, through tremendously difficult environments and events occurring, staying strong with the help of God and their religion pushing them to m...

Feedback Strategies, helping kids grow

I read the article: Preschoolers and Praise: What Kinds of Messages Help Kids Grow? Which I found very interesting. A lot of little kids feel like they can't do a lot of things like tying shoes, or writing their name which results in them saying "I can't" too much then they should be. After reading the article I found that young kids are still trying to develop the idea of a self-concept, knowing what they are able to achieve, who they are and what they are capable of doing which plays a role in their saying "I can't". This is where a growth mindset comes into play with the help of parents, with parents sharing praise with the child and pointing out what they are doing good and improving at will teach kids to have a growth mindset in not say they cant but rather they are doing good and they will do better and keep progressing forward. Another key factor would be for parents to harness the power of yet, while kids become more independent they need to know...

Topic research

The project topic I will choose is " "Explore the relationship between elements of the selection. For example: how does setting influence character development?".  The key elements needed for this project will be for me to focus on one element, and how that connects another element and the relationship those two have. I am choosing this topic because I like to see how a story comes toghether through the interaction of different elements. I have found that while all elements in a story are important to move the story along the key elements I will choose from will be setting, character, plot or point of view. upon further research, I think I will explore the relationship between character and setting.

Week 3, Anayisis

I have chosen to do a close reading on the first page of the poem Self-Reliance written by James Monroe Whitfield. The language used in the poem connects to the larger picture and message James Whitfield tries to portray in his writing. I was drawn into this part of the poem because of the language and the message it carries as well as the emotions they bring along. Whitfield begins to discuss the kind of person he admires saying he loves “the man whose lofty mind On God and its own strength relies on” (1 Whitfield). The way he describes the type of person he admires he very powerful it gives the reader characteristics of who they should reflect. Whitfield also describes the admirable person as not caring for the world's applause and following God's path.     Whitfield continually talks about God through is a poem and ties his messages back to him. He discusses how God helps those who need it and during such a difficult time of discrimination and Black oppression, Whitfield t...

Reading notes, week 3, Whitfield- Self Reliance

The Poem Self-Reliance by James Whitfield is very powerful and moving. Whitfield is writing about a time of slavery and discrimination but he sees the light in every situation and teaches readers through his poem how to go about life and stay positive in times where life isn't. Whitfield talks about having faith in God and the power God has over us in every situation as well as one needing to lift their soul to God above as Whitfield says. Whitfield continues to discuss how to stay strong, and rely on God, he put out a positive message during a time of black oppression and fighting for equal rights in order to get others through this time period in history and after it.

Reading notes, week 3,Coolbirth

The Ina Cool birth is made up of different short poems by Josephine Donna Smith. While reading one of her poems titled Retrospect brings one through different seasonal and nature settings. I am able to imagine the setting well by imagining and analyzing some of the words the author uses such as "sunset glow, cactus hedge, gleams of orchard snow and soft coo of mourning doves". All of the descriptive words she uses paints a picture in my head of what I think she is describing. The author, Josephine also says " one moment all the world is peace" (231) which leaves me thinking all the places she mentioned are very calming and peaceful. While reading I was able to form pictures in my head from the descriptions she gave put also how I already picture what she writes about, from my own experiences. Reading this poem left me with a peaceful feeling I imagine living in these settings and not having a care in a world knowing that there is peace within me. ...

Feedback Thoughts

Feedback can be the best thing to receive but also really hard to accept. Often times we don't like hearing what we have done wrong, especially if it is something you have worked really hard on. Without positive feedback no one would improve in their work, they may think nothing is wrong when in reality there is a lot to improve on. Like mentioned, this is where having a growth mindset comes into play. Knowing just cause you to hear something that you don't want hear does not mean you have to stop and does not mean you have failed but rather you can learn from your mistakes and grow from them, allowing you to improve. Looking back on my time as a student I think the best feedback I received was with my essay writing, it is something I have never been great at so receiving good feedback has really helped me improve. The feedback I have received in life that has helped me regarded ways in which I should better communicate with others and that feedba...

Topic Project Brainstorm

For my first project topic, I choose to "Explore the relationship between elements of the selection. For example: how does setting influence character development?". I hope to explore this topic more because I am interested in discovering the connections between two different elements that make the plot move like it is supposed to. I have some experience when it comes to this topic and has done previous assignments doing the same thing. Often times a character does not act in a certain way without different elements interacting with them. There needs to be an interaction and relationship between two elements in a story for a plot to occur and make an interesting story that readers will want to explore more of. I hope to learn more through this assignment of how to identify the relationship between two elements more efficiently. Often times I complicate things in my writing and analyzing so choosing this topic will help me to narrow it down to choosing 2 elemen...

Week 2 Literary Analysis Coyote Cooks His Daughter

In the short story: Coyote Cooks His Daughter, literacy elements are used to move the storyline along. The characters are the heart of this story and without their actions,  the story would have no plot but with efficient use of the literary devices of characters and their roles in the story the reader is able to have the plot to follow along with. The actions of the father coyote determine the next events of the story, the father has selfish thoughts and actions which result in him killing his daughter for food to satisfy what he wants. Due to the father's actions a theme can be identified in the story being, one has to be careful who they trust, even those who you think love and care about you the most. The theme symbolizes to me that in my own life and in others we have to be careful who we let in, sadly not everyone is honest and does not have the best intentions of being a part of your life. You have to look out for your self and others and doing so by sometimes saying no to p...

Reading notes W2: Coyote Cooks His Daughter

The story Coyote Cooks His Daughter has an underlying theme of one has to be careful who they  trust. The insight and influence behind this story could have come from a personal experience someone has been, perhaps not someone killing their child in order to have food to eat but rather when you think you are safe with your family who should love and support you the most then turn there backs on you and do something unthinkable. The father Coyote ultimately killed his daughter coyote for selfish reasons, because he could find no food to cook. The father coyote then turned to his daughter to sacrifice her for his won selfish reasons "so he didn't see anything to kill. So grabbing his daughter he hit her with a stick" (53). The underlying theme being, that  one has to be careful who they trust is evident in this quote, the daughter thought she was going to fetch food with her father but little did she know he would then turn his back on her and use her for food. The theme in...

Reading Notes W2: The Creation

The Creation: (Maidu) has an underlying story that the author is trying to tell through the characters. Specifically, the character Earthmaker who plays the role of the creator of all things: God. The character Earthmaker has the power and authority over everyone and everything, being able to make things happen that no one else has the ability to do. The act of creation and different events occur because of the power and actions by the Earthmaker, without this character the story would not move along smoothly without some crucial and different events. The author uses the Earthmaker to tell the story they want to portray with the Earthmaker making these events happen.  The Earthmaker wanted to make a birds nest bigger so " As he talked, he transformed it" (25) he has the power to make things how he wants and when he wants.  I believe the author through this story is also trying to make connections to  the Bible such as by saying " Then he made creatures...
