Reading notes Week 14, Vietnam Eazy part 2

Trami Cron discusses personal accounts of her dating life and what that looks like in Vietnamese culture. You were considered bad if you liked someone and dating someone was considered inappropriate. Common gestures like men bringing flowers to the girl when going on date was a common practice in Vietnamese culture but one that Trami disliked. Dating was unacceptable to Tramis mother and once when she was caught with a boy her mother most definitely expressed how wrong she was for being seen with a boy. Trami continues to show throughout this story how a Vietnamese culture deals with common social issues differently, and most of them tiring Trami out and they are customs she wishes she could not carry with her because of how tolling they have been on her.

Reading notes, week 14 Vietnam Eazy

The author, Trami Cron tells a personal story and upbringing the book Vietnam Eazy. In the last part of the book, Trami discusses how she often times feels undermined and that not everyone is aware of what one may be feeling or experiencing. Trami states: “ I thought about all the times I allowed women to be unkind to me and I did not fight back, all because of my Buddhist upbring” Due to Tramis upbringing she took what people said to her, tearing her apart emotionally and not feeling like she could do anything about it because of her cultural background. Generations in Vietnamese culture and to come up with ways to beat and overcome adversity. Trami says in order for them to survive with dignity from the social problems they faced they would have to come up with stories and tales that placed the Vietnamese soul over other races for once.

Week 13, topic brainstorm

The first project I am considering doing for project number three is to: Compare and contrast elements of two different texts. For example, explore the similarities and differences between two characters in the texts, or examine how one theme is handled in similar and dissimilar ways in two different texts. This topic is something I would want to explore for a few reasons, one being that I need to meet the requirements of writing about two different texts and this topic would fulfill that requirement. Another reason being, this topic would challenge me and my writing abilities and I am up for that. I oftentimes have a hard time analyzing two different texts while being able to compare and contrast them while still being able to get a point across clearly. I think this topic would be good to help me to become a better writer. As of right now one of the text will be from the current book I am reading: Vietnam Eazy by Trami    as well as      being able to identify...

Week 13, analysis Vietnam easy

Literary elements and devices in the book Vietnam eazy by Trami Cron used in the reading I explored this week was the use of characters and plot. The sequence of events that occurred in the story influenced the way the characters act and how they development as a person because of the events they have been through. Trami being on the cooking show and different events in her life lead her to find out about the anxiety disorder she had, if it was not for the plot of the story we would never be made aware of the disorder she had which then lead us to gain insight on Vietnamese culture and why health disorders are to ignored and not accepted. The theme of acceptance is heavily talked about in this text. Vietnamese women have to act a certain way and be a certain way to gain acceptance from others and not be frowned upon by others in society. It is hard to gain approval from others so being careful in the way you act and perceive yourself to others is very crucial. Cultural elements play a ...

Reading notes, week 13 Vietnam easy

As I read this story more and more I am being made aware of dffernt Vietnamese culture traditions and expectations. " I was so well trained to retain my composure at all times" ( Trami 83) " It was muted beneath yeas of practice to suppress any extreme emotion" (Trami 83) Body lanuage and simple actions like making eye contact can be seen as inappropriate. Having to contain movement and excitment neded to be practiced so one did not act inappropratly and offend someone. The thought of disaproval was common amoung vietnamese women, needing to be on there gaurd to not act wrongly.  The theme of acceptance is talked a lot about by Trami and something she thought about day in and day out wheather it be from strangers she came i connact with even her own famiy and feeling the need to please them.

Reading notes, week 13, Vietnam Easy

Trami is now deep into the cooking show and notices symptoms of her being nervous when on the phone and she would get sweaty armpits. She decided to consult a doctor and found that she had symptoms of anxiety. " It was not acceptable for us Vietnamese to have mood disorders. It was not allowed" (59) You would think an issue with a mental health disorder would not be frowned upon but rather people and family would want to come alongside that person and help them through it. This is not the case in Vietnamese culture and those types of people would be considered crazy. Looking at the cultural differences when dealing with different health and mental issues are dealt with quite differently, some cultures embrace it and others try to ignore the fact that it exists. It seems as though Trami would want to deal with it and talk to her doctor about ways to work through the problem but that is not he way her culture deals with this topic instead she said she would mas...

Project 2 Revised, In The Land of the Free

The story In the Land of the Free by Edith Maude Eaton uses the experience of a family immigrating to the United States to show a glimpse of history and bring awareness to immigration issues and policies in place that ends up tearing apart and separating families. Eaton also discusses and defends the Chinese American culture who have and still do face issues with discrimination and immigration. Edith Maud Eaton is writing and bringing light to a part of history through this story which shows us the more emotional side to what people experience during immigration and how each person's experience, whether good or bad can become an artifact of history. The text is written by Edith Maude Eaton;  In The Land of the Free can be considered an artifact of history because it tells a story of a families immigration experience at the turn of the twentieth century. Eaton is writing in defense of the Chinese in America who have experienced an alike situation of the toll they have experienc...

Week 12 analysis, Vietnam Easy

In Vietnam Eazy by Trami, she is telling a story of personal experience. The use of character development through different events in the text is able to move the plot along. The setting Trami is in determines some of the events and feeling she associates with them allowing the reader to gain a better understanding of who she is in the mundane events that occur in her life. A theme I see running through the story is approval. It is common in Vietnamese culture to have high standards to live up to and meet seeking the approval of others in different situations. Trami expresses how Vietnamese women have high standards to uphold and take pride in doing so, they are always expected to think of others before themselves and to not show pride of their accomplishments but more so show that pride of others first. Trami expresses how Vietnamese women are supposed to look and dress a certain way, always having themselves put together physically and emotionally. To gain the approval of others in V...

Reading notes, week 12 Vietnam Easy

Trami got a call from the producers saying she got a spot on the show. As she is filled with excitement she has to compose herself from being overly joyous "my fate was to be a good wife to my husband and to take pride in his accomplishments, not my own" Different aspects and ways to behave in Vietnamese culture are shown through the different experiences Trami has and in this situation, she was taught raised to be more reserved about her emotions and to praise others accomplishments before her own. She notes this is the way Vietnamese women have been raised for generations. The fate of Vietnamese women is to be accepted by all and they were taught they could do nothing to change it. The idea of learning to love your self was nonexistent in Vietnamese culture " Loving yourself meant you were selfish and self-centered" Trami had a lot expected of her starting at a young age, she was seen to honor her mother and do what she wished of her. Many mothers in Vie...

Reading Notes, week 12, Vietnam Easy

Vietnam Easy by Trami Craun  Chinese women in L.A. not feeling as she belongs.  She looks around and no one is like her, she feels out of place and as if she does not belong. She is trying out for a cooking show and notices the common Chinese appearance.  We are shown through a silly conversation with Tramis grandmother about the appearance of her bodies compared to her mothers that their culture is taught to respect each other, especially one's elders. In this particular situation silence would be seen as disrespectful but also the wrong answer would not be accepted either. Trami also discusses the relationship between her and her husband and while their relationship seems strong we see that it is part of there culture to yet still be distant and not pay much attention to one another.  Trami is trying to get her own cooking show and as she is waiting to be called in she notices each person has something unique and striking about them and at th...

Weekly review, week 11

The reading this week went good, I think reading about a different point of views from different eras is very interesting and insightful. My reading notes analysis was probably my best wring for the week. Reading my classmates work I realized we all took away some of the same ideas from the readings. My other classes and this won have been very busy, gearing up for midterms and such. My plans for next week is to get ahead and end up in a good spot with all points caught up.

week 11, analysis Henderson

In David Henderson's poem California 13, the literary device of setting is used all throughout the poem working to form the plot and set the stage for character development. The use of diction is very well used to explain the detail in the setting, with descriptive words and details down to measurements being used really allows the reader to feel like they are a character in the story. A theme I see running through the story is justice for people during the black art movement. Henderson is writing through a time of the Black arts movement where many people, including Henderson, used that era to express their roots and heritage and bring light to how so many of them have struggled.

Reading notes, week 11 Henderson

David Henderson's poem California 13 The setting of the poem is set through the use of detailed descriptive words “ facing east above the Berkeley trees” It seems like Henderson is writing to describe his day through different events and details. “ cars and trucks appear and disappear” As I am reading the poem, due to the great use of diction the reader is painted a very clear picture of what the author is explaining, down to every fine detail. “ the cars are seven-eighths of an inch long” “ a pedestrian is five-sixteenths of an inch tall” Cities and locations are brought up all throughout the text. A story of a different point of views and experiences is being discussed.
