Reading notes, week 12 Vietnam Easy
Trami got a call from the producers saying she got a spot on the show. As she is filled with excitement she has to compose herself from being overly joyous "my fate was to be a good wife to my husband and to take pride in his accomplishments, not my own"
Different aspects and ways to behave in Vietnamese culture are shown through the different experiences Trami has and in this situation, she was taught raised to be more reserved about her emotions and to praise others accomplishments before her own. She notes this is the way Vietnamese
women have been raised for generations.
The fate of Vietnamese women is to be accepted by all and they were taught they could do nothing to change it.
The idea of learning to love your self was nonexistent in Vietnamese culture " Loving yourself meant you were selfish and self-centered"
Trami had a lot expected of her starting at a young age, she was seen to honor her mother and do what she wished of her. Many mothers in Vietnamese culture can be seen as cold and stern having strict rules and high standards of their children with not much lenience
