Reading notes, week 13 Vietnam easy

As I read this story more and more I am being made aware of dffernt Vietnamese culture traditions and expectations.

" I was so well trained to retain my composure at all times" ( Trami 83)

" It was muted beneath yeas of practice to suppress any extreme emotion" (Trami 83)

Body lanuage and simple actions like making eye contact can be seen as inappropriate. Having to contain movement and excitment neded to be practiced so one did not act inappropratly and offend someone. The thought of disaproval was common amoung vietnamese women, needing to be on there gaurd to not act wrongly.

The theme of acceptance is talked a lot about by Trami and something she thought about day in and day out wheather it be from strangers she came i connact with even her own famiy and feeling the need to please them.

  1. Hi Grace. It is interesting that in the Vietnamese culture, females only I am assuming, always need to retain their composure. I think I can do that easily, since I am not a person who shows my emotions just with anyone. Also, I notice that when I have gone to the nails shops where there are a lot of Vietnamese workers, most of them are quiet. I wonder if this has to do with retaining composure. But from time to time I did see a couple of Vietnamese ladies act excited and I did not see anything wrong with that. I think when people are excited it means they are happy. Thanks for sharing.
