Week 4, Analysis, Old Monterey
The most vivid literary element used in the poem, Old Monterey written by Charles Warren Stoddard I believe would be the setting. The setting in the text takes up the majority of the plot, with Stoddard describing different feelings, emotions, and visions then correlates with the different settings in nature. Without the descriptive words used to describe the setting ‘old Monterey’ in which the author is talking about, the poem would then have no structured plot. I have identified the theme in this poem as, finding the beauty in nature. Finding the beauty in nature can be seen in a few different ways, first being the actual beauty of the different elements of nature and the scenery itself and secondly, the beauty in the different emotional states being in nature can take you to. Throughout the whole story the author refers to different parts of nature and discusses it natural physical beauty “ The wind and wave pour over the rocks that are barren and bony” (227 Stoddard) the descriptive words are used to allow the reader to visualize the scene and it leaves the reader with a feeling of wanting to go to a place that is described because it symbolizes peace and tranquility. The setting and text also allow the theme of finding beauty in nature to connect to a more emotional state of beauty and rest. Being in some of these settings allows a person to let go of their troubles and worries and find beauty within themselves which I believe is the message Stoddard is trying to portray Personal elements can play a role into the development of this story based on the authors own personal life at the time. Being that he was an avid traveler and loved the beauty in nature he wanted to give his reader the chance to feel the same way he as whilst traveling and seeing the beauty in nature. The personal element of this story weaves in with the setting element used in this story allowing the personal background of the author to then determine and influence the setting of the text he wrote.
Hi Grace,
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading your take on “Old Monterey”. I skimmed this reading; however, I was able to pick up on parts of the details you provided. One surprising thing I found was your theme choice. It is one that flew over my head: the beauty of nature. You state: Finding the beauty in nature can be seen in a few different ways, first being the actual beauty of the different elements of nature and the scenery itself and secondly, the beauty in the different emotional states being in nature can take you to – how do you feel the beauty of nature has emotionally impact the author’s being? Do you feel that without explaining of scenery, the story would truly have no structure? I will have to reread this story and see all the parts of nature.
Great job!
Hello grace! I really enjoyed your analysis on the story. I too believe that the setting is the element that stands out the most. For me the setting made me feel incredibly calm, like just peacefully sitting on the beach and watching the sunset. The beauty of nature is definitely summarized perfectly within the story. Great job!
