Week 3, Anayisis
I have chosen to do a close reading on the first page of the poem Self-Reliance written by James Monroe Whitfield. The language used in the poem connects to the larger picture and message James Whitfield tries to portray in his writing. I was drawn into this part of the poem because of the language and the message it carries as well as the emotions they bring along. Whitfield begins to discuss the kind of person he admires saying he loves “the man whose lofty mind On God and its own strength relies on” (1 Whitfield). The way he describes the type of person he admires he very powerful it gives the reader characteristics of who they should reflect. Whitfield also describes the admirable person as not caring for the world's applause and following God's path.
Whitfield continually talks about God through is a poem and ties his messages back to him. He discusses how God helps those who need it and during such a difficult time of discrimination and Black oppression, Whitfield tries to see the Good in such a very hard and difficult time for many but he reminds his reader to have hope and that with the help of God and the strong characteristics of people they can get through anything. The first portion of the text where Whitfield discusses the characteristics and effects of someone with strong character traits and the power of God in the first portion of the poem and then the first portion is a leading point for what he then discusses after. While Whitfield discusses many things in a positive manner he is also realistic about the not so positive sides of things. Whitfield states “ With visions that full brightly shone, But now, alas! Are dimmed and gone” (2 Whitfield). Whitfield brings reality to how to life can really be and the trials and hard times that come along with it. Whitfield writes about two different states of minds someone may for through and compares and contrasts those feeling in different parts of his poem through the use of many different emotions.

Hi Grace, I also think that Whitfield portrays the type of people that we should be. When he speaks about how the visions are bright but alas they are dimmed we can get a sense of what he wish and can envision the world can be full of but he is brought into reality that not everyone is like this and so that vision is dimmed and gone.
