Week 2 Literary Analysis Coyote Cooks His Daughter

In the short story: Coyote Cooks His Daughter, literacy elements are used to move the storyline along. The characters are the heart of this story and without their actions,  the story would have no plot but with efficient use of the literary devices of characters and their roles in the story the reader is able to have the plot to follow along with. The actions of the father coyote determine the next events of the story, the father has selfish thoughts and actions which result in him killing his daughter for food to satisfy what he wants. Due to the father's actions a theme can be identified in the story being, one has to be careful who they trust, even those who you think love and care about you the most. The theme symbolizes to me that in my own life and in others we have to be careful who we let in, sadly not everyone is honest and does not have the best intentions of being a part of your life. You have to look out for your self and others and doing so by sometimes saying no to people and things, which may be hard at the time but ultimately it will save you a lot of trouble. The author uses the theme of being careful who you trust to discuss and mirror a situation where this may have occurred in someones life and to show how you may not really know what someone is thinking or what they are going through. At the beginning of the story, the father coyote seems a trustworthy, kind man going to find food in order to feed his family. Soon after the father and daughter are out and unable to find food the father's character traits change drastically when he resorts to killing his daughter to feed his wife. Cultural and religious believes behind this story can inform the reader greatly as to why the father acted the way he did. There could be religious or cultural beliefs and customs of sacrifice which I think have influenced the author in writing the story of Coyote Cooks His Daughter. Many different elements, themes, and context are used in this story to move it along and give the readers a plot to follow.

  1. Good job, Grace! I enjoyed reading your discussion of the theme of trust. In practicing for the project work, when you discuss a theme, try and also discuss in a bit more depth how the events and words of the story bring you to see that theme. Keep up the great work!

  2. Hi, Grace!
I like how your analysis is about the essence of trusting someone. As individuals, we intrinsically have strong trust to our parents because they raise us and shower us with love. I wish you'd discuss about the trust between the coyote and his daughter in more depth. Thank you for relating the theme of the story to your experiences.

    Best,
    Regina

  3. Hi Grace, I like that you wrote that literary elements are used to move this story along, but what if you listed the elements you noticed in the beginning of your analysis right after you wrote that? Why do you think the father has selfish thoughts to kill his daughter? What if you used a quote as evidence that the father has selfish thoughts? I agree that the father’s actions do determine the next events in this story. I agree that trust is a theme, but what if there was another theme you could point out? What if another theme was that desperate times call for desperate measures? I like that you elaborated on trust and that we should look out for ourselves because anyone can turn on you. What if you used quotes on when the father and his daughter were going to find food and when he was not finding any? What if you elaborated on the many different elements that you noticed in this story? I really enjoyed reading your analysis Grace. It is horrible that the father killed his daughter for food. Very bad and sad for the father to have done that.

  4. Happy Sunday Grace!

Thank you for your analysis. I did not care for this story, mainly because a father appears to be taking his daughter out to show her how to hunt and spending time with her and then he kills her for food. I really don't understand how this could be done by a father, not only to kill, but then be able to eat her.
The theme, be careful who you let in, is very true for this story, but how could you not let in or trust your father? I agree that we need to be careful who we let in and trust and it is important to think about what we say to others.
Have you thought about what religion or culture would kill their own children for food. I could not imagine, killing my daughter because I was hungry. I would sacrifice myself for my daughter. I would want her to live and enjoy her life.
