Week 4, project planning, Coyote Cooks his Daughter
I plan to explore the project topic of "Explore the relationship between elements of the selection. For example: how does setting influence character development?". For my project I will use the reading Coyote Cooks his Daughter and I will choose to explore the relationship between Setting and character. I will further analyze how the setting the coyotes live in the impact the actions of the father coyote and I will examine the relationship between those two to elements. The element of setting describes where the story takes place, helping to give readers an image and idea to build background and it helps describe the mood and tone of the story aswell. I will analyze the setting by identifying where the main part of the story takes place, using background information and context clues to do so, then I can look for the mood that is created by the setting which plays a role in setting the tone for the story. The element:characters can be analyzed by determining their different character traits and personalities, in this case, the father coyotes. I will also determine the characters actions and the motives behind them to give me a better idea of the father coyotes traits and actions. The setting can influence characters and their actions can change based on the setting of which they are in . In the story, Coyote Cooks his Daughter due to the setting they were in, which was an environment with little to no food it then caused the father to act the way he did which resulted in him killing his daughter for food when he could find none in his surroundings. I will also go about this project by finding out why the author created this character to be the way he is and to find out why and how the character, the father coyote acted the way in which he did. In addition, I will need to provide textual evidence which describe the setting, parts that paint pictures into the readers head giving me an idea of what the coyoytes enviornment was like.
Hi Grace! Thanks for your notes exploring your chosen topic a bit further.
ReplyDeleteIt looks as though you have a good sense of what you need to do in your project. You are right to use your planning post to understand what setting is, what character is, and how the two work together to reveal what you argue they reveal.
Remember to lead off your project with an arguable statement — something that someone who read the same reading could reasonably disagree with. What is your general argument going to be?
I look forward to reading your project submission!
Hi Grace!
ReplyDeleteYou have chosen an excellent topic / story match! I think analyzing “Coyote Cooks His Daughter” by how the setting and situation influenced the outcome is a great way to really understand what exactly happened in this story. Exploring this story from this angle also takes away some of the shock factor of how anyone could eat their daughter; well, it is not “anyone”, it is a coyote. The story humanizes the coyote by adding a home like setting and conversations between the coyotes, however, when broken down to the survival traits of coyotes and the purpose the coyote had in the story, it makes the outcome a little more understandable. Be sure to follow the change in setting and character development within your project with examples from the text supporting how they are connected. Your comment, “The setting can influence characters and their actions can change based on the setting of which they are in” nailed the whole purpose of this topic.
Good luck!
