Project 2 topic brainstorm

The first topic I may want to use for my project is: Choose one short story or novel excerpt. Write a piece in which you explore the following: In what ways could this story be considered an artifact of history? What does this story teach us about history? How does a story teach us about a time or place differently than a history book? This project topic is interesting to me because I think events big or small can play a lasting impression and part in history. Personal events and happenings can also play a role and reflect different times in history and history that will never be forgotten. Depending on the story I choose to go with this topic I will most likely have previous knowledge on what has happened to make history and how that ties into the story. I hope to learn through this assignment that even the smallest events or biggest events in someone's life can be a part of history even a history that is just their own. From doing the project I have learned that not having a basis about the topic but kind of going in blindly to write it will allow you to keep personal beliefs and thoughts out of the writing and keep to the facts. That experience that I have gained from project one can be helpful with this topic because it will remind me to not bring my own feelings about history into the writing. The second topic I am interested in exploring is: Think about a theme you see running through your life (failure is the best lesson, love is eternal, etc). Choose a reading that you think also discusses this theme (even if it reaches different conclusions about it). Explore connections between how the theme plays out in your life, and how the theme gets played out in the reading. I will have a lot of previous knowledge depending on the theme I choose because it is a theme I have seen or do see running through my life so I will be able to connect to it and the text well. I would like to learn how what I may be going through can be similar to someone else's story. I will be able to learn and reflect how I got through or how the theme in my life came to be as well as in the story. I will bring being an expert in the theme I have running in my life and still having a lot to learn. Being able to connect two peoples themes in life and pointing out how they are similar and different is kind of like what I did in project one so I will have that experience going into this project. Lastly, the third project topic I may be interested in is: Pick a subject: love, work, freedom, etc. Then choose two selections and discuss how that subject is discussed in those selections. Use literary devices to help frame your discussion.  I think this would be an interesting topic to write about, thinking about how two authors end up writing about the same subject while still having a different storyline and plot is very cool. I have previous knowledge in this topic by having to compare and contrast wither two stories or the different literary elements in the story, which is part of what I need to do here so I  have experience in that area. I would also like to learn and practice how to analyze and see how a subject plays out in the plot of a story. In the first project, I had to compare and see how the literary devices connected with each other so I have good knowledge in literary devices as well as being able to explain how different part of a story all work together to form a theme and or subject to be delivered to the reader.

  1. Hi Grace!
We have chosen the same topics.
For our first project I completed it on your first choice. I thought it was an easy one but from feedback from others they said they thought I chose a difficult one. In the end it was challenging because I had to do a lot of research to compare how the story was similar to history, but I learned a lot.
Your second one, chose a theme from a story that is going on in your life, this is a good one, however I would suggest that you find a story or two that you feel is similar to a theme in your life and see how much you will be able to compare and write about.
Lastly, choosing a subject on love, work, freedom and how it is shown in a story, I think is what I am choosing this time. So many of our stories have these subjects and I think your analysis of how it is shown would be good.
Whichever you choose, it will be a great project.
    Good luck.

  2. Hi, Grace!

It seems that you have everything pretty much organized. The way you planned everything out sounds like you have a great start and is ready to write.
Your first topic seems the hardest for me. Writing things with a historical context in mind requires a few minutes (hours, maybe) of research, and to me, it seems hard (I think it's due to the fact that history was a subject that never interested me).
Your second and third ones are the same that I have considered, too. I think that's also awesome that you already have many ideas of how to develop your project based on a theme that is also happening in your life.

Our professor said that these comments should be helpful and thoughtful, but I don't know how I could help you out since it seems you have everything handled already. I'm pretty sure your project will be amazing, so I will wish you good work!
