reading notes, week 6, Beyond the Breakers
George Sterling's poem Beyond the Breakers talks about the different characteristics and feelings associated with that of the ocean. Being someone who loves nature and loves the ocean I really enjoyed reading this text. As I read it I felt calm, at ease and I could picture every word that was said like as if I was a character in the story. With that, I think the author, George Sterling did a great job with the use of imagery being able to paint a picture of what he wrote into the reader's' mind. The calmness and tranquility of the ocean can be summarized from a few lines of his poem " The singing waves of the sea, clean beyond all of clean" ( Sterling). The author points out the pureness of the ocean, the waves coming into shore are described as singing and the ocean is the cleanest of anything, with each new wave coming in bring cleanliness. I can picture myself sitting on the beach seeing and hearing each wave come crashing in bringing peace and calm among me. The author also highlights the importance of the ocean and the embrace it shows to others. This line the author rights I think is very powerful and can house many meanings. “The great embrace of the ocean was closer than love’s can be” (sterling) to state that the oceans embrace is greater than that of love is a very powerful statement being that many would argue that love is one of the greatest things to embrace. The senses of the ocean can be very intense and it welcomes everyone, showing them love and embracing each person to put them at peace. I believe the author wrote this poem: Beyond the Breakers because it is something coming from experience and a passion of his. He talks from things he has experienced associated with the ocean which seems to have been a big part of his life.
