Week 7, analysis Eaton
In the story The Land of the Free by Edith Maud Eaton it is through the characters experiencing the theme of discrimination and fear that they then reflect the greater theme of love and sacrifice. The literary element I have chosen being characters in this story play a major role in the plot. The 3 main characters being: The little one, Lao Choo and Hom Hing his parents have a very special bond with one another. These individuals have the characteristics of being brave, strong-willed, loving and inseparable staying this way through the very difficult challenges they face of being separated from one another against their will. This family is faced with the worst fear many parents have, being separated from their child and through that time they did not give up, they fought so hard to be reunited to their little one, having unconditional love toward their child. The parents continued to fight until they got their papers to be reunited to their little one. Once they got the papers and were filled with joy without knowing the heartbreaking reality that after 10 months their little one did not remember who they were. The story ends with a cliffhanger of knowing what will happen to the family. I like to believe that they did not give up at that moment but they remained strong in order to work and build that bond and trust back with their little one. The theme of love is very important in this story and it shows me that I am confident that my parents and others who love me would go to extreme measures to keep our relationship. The historical factors in play here are the immigration rules and processes in place which ended up separating this family, due to papers not being up to standard and showing proof of the little one it ended up resulting in the parents painfully being separated from their little one. The parents were able to remain strong thinking about the day they would be reunited with their little one and constantly loving him through it all.
The themes you chose were interesting. I think the father sacrificed for love also by going with his wife back to their home country because she wanted their son to be born there. The hope of having their son returned to them after he was taken from them, is what would have kept them strong during such a painful period for them.

ReplyDeleteHello Grace!
I like the theme of love that you choose for this story and the ways that you supported your analysis with the information from the story. This family truly survived on the love that they had for each other. Lao Choo would have given up everything she had to get Little One back, she had so much love for her child. I am happy the love she had for her child helped her fight for the 10 long months he was away.
Great analysis.
