week 11, analysis Henderson

In David Henderson's poem California 13, the literary device of setting is used all throughout the poem working to form the plot and set the stage for character development. The use of diction is very well used to explain the detail in the setting, with descriptive words and details down to measurements being used really allows the reader to feel like they are a character in the story. A theme I see running through the story is justice for people during the black art movement. Henderson is writing through a time of the Black arts movement where many people, including Henderson, used that era to express their roots and heritage and bring light to how so many of them have struggled.

  1. Hi grace,

I think you accurately described Henderson's use of setting as a literary device. This work is very much about California as the setting, and the promise of California as a place of new life; i think of Horace Greeley's statement, "Go west young man". I believed Henderson used this setting to express freedom, the freedom of travel and discovery. Being from New York this was a perspective of California was one of a locality virgin and we are taken along with him on his adventure of discovery. I also think that you correctly express the importance of the Black Arts movement to this work. Blacks have long felt "pinned up" and ordered. This sense of free movement was liberating to many.

  2. Hello I think that you did a really good job understanding Henderson's work. To be honest I did the exact same story but I got a whole different view of it. Reading your view of this made “ California 13” make more sense. I also love how you express the thoughts on Black Arts. Nice job with this and thank you for helping me understand this better.
