Week 12 analysis, Vietnam Easy
In Vietnam Eazy by Trami, she is telling a story of personal experience. The use of character development through different events in the text is able to move the plot along. The setting Trami is in determines some of the events and feeling she associates with them allowing the reader to gain a better understanding of who she is in the mundane events that occur in her life. A theme I see running through the story is approval. It is common in Vietnamese culture to have high standards to live up to and meet seeking the approval of others in different situations. Trami expresses how Vietnamese women have high standards to uphold and take pride in doing so, they are always expected to think of others before themselves and to not show pride of their accomplishments but more so show that pride of others first. Trami expresses how Vietnamese women are supposed to look and dress a certain way, always having themselves put together physically and emotionally. To gain the approval of others in Vietnamese culture there are certain standards one must live up to do so, which Trami expresses can be quite a burden and wear them out easily. Cultural and religious backgrounds play a role in this story and character development. Background information about the character's culture can give a lot of insight as to why characters act the way they do.
Well, looks like I should have read your week 12 analysis before reading week 13! I would love to see some quotes from the story to show Trami's feelings of pressure to live up to these high standards. I am curious if writers / authors are an acceptable career choice. You reference background information building the character -- I would love to read some more of the specific background information.

Hi Grace! I really enjoyed reading this analysis. It seems like it is similar to The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tran. She used her experiences to tell a story and used it to give insight on the Chinese culture. A culture that has high standards can be very challenging for two reasons, one it is good to have high standards because you can see how hard they work and can be very successful in life, however it can be very difficult because of the pressure put on a person and being afraid to fail. Great job.
