Week 13, topic brainstorm
The first project I am considering doing for project number three is to: Compare and contrast elements of two different texts. For example, explore the similarities and differences between two characters in the texts, or examine how one theme is handled in similar and dissimilar ways in two different texts. This topic is something I would want to explore for a few reasons, one being that I need to meet the requirements of writing about two different texts and this topic would fulfill that requirement. Another reason being, this topic would challenge me and my writing abilities and I am up for that. I oftentimes have a hard time analyzing two different texts while being able to compare and contrast them while still being able to get a point across clearly. I think this topic would be good to help me to become a better writer. As of right now one of the text will be from the current book I am reading: Vietnam Eazy by Trami as well as being able to identify how the main characters in the book have been through some of the same and different experiences and how their cultural backgrounds have played a role in the way they behave and act as they do. There are many different reasons as to why a character may act the way they do so being able to compare two different stories will show what factors can play into character choices.
The second topic I may consider writing about is: From a piece of fiction (short story, a section of the novel, or a play) choose a female character on whom to focus, and create a project that discusses some of the following questions: What is the author’s attitude towards her? (how can you tell?) What is your attitude towards her? How do (at least 2) other characters view her? How does she view herself?. I would complete this topic on the story Vietnam Eazy by Trami and on the main character of Trami herself who discusses some of the battles she has faced as a Vietnamese women. This story focuses on a great female character and through a time of ups and downs. I would like to write about this topic because I have seen through reading this book how different cultures deal with different situations and how specifically in this story Vietnamese women are held to very high standards and feel like they are living a life seeking approval. Being able to take a character from a story and analyzing their life and why the author created them the way they did is an important thing to know how to do.
The third topic choice I am considering to write about for project three is: Pick a subject: love, work, freedom, etc. Then choose two selections and discuss how that subject is discussed in those selections. Use literary devices to help frame your discussion. I would choose to write about this topic also discussing the story of Vietnam Eazy by Trami. Picking a subject that I see best running through this story and how that is reflected in the characters would be what I do first. The use of literary devices in a story is very important for the plot to move along smoothly and for there to be characterization within all of the characters. This topic is very broad so there is a lot of room to be creative in my writing and to make it how I want to be, while this sounds like a good way to go about the writing I think it will also be a challenge for me to come up with a good outline and stick with it throughout my writing. I will bring prior knowledge of picking a subject I see running throughout the story I feel confident in doing this and have good writings in the best doing the same thing.

Hi Grace! I like that you are looking forward to the challenge of picking a topic that may pose some difficulty for you! The trick to doing the first choice successfully is to really focus in on an element that is prominent in both works. As long as you keep your narrative focus on the element, that will help you navigate writing about two separate texts.
ReplyDeleteI look forward to seeing what you choose!
Hi Grace. Your first possible choice is very challenging. It is difficult to compare and contrast two books. It can get tricky so if you end up choosing this topic, what if you start is as soon as possible so that you have more time. What if you take breaks in between and try not to finish it in one sitting or even one day. I think if you try to do it in on day then the point will be even more likely not to come out clear. I do think you can learn from choosing this topic though. I think it is like exercise. The more you do it the easier it gets. Your second possible choice seems very interesting as well. I would like to read of all the pressures Vietnamese women face for approval. What are some of those pressures? It seems like you have a lot of experience in your third possible choice. Have you thought about what you would write about specifically if you choose the third topic? It looks like your off to a great start. Good Luck.
ReplyDeleteGrace,
ReplyDeleteYour first consideration to "Compare and contrast elements of two different texts". And to "explore the similarities and differences between two characters in the texts" is an interesting choice. Are you concerned with comparing apples to oranges? I would imagine that the trick would be to find things that are interestingly similar and from that point try to determine why there would be any differences.
