Week 14, Projet Planning

The project prompt I will discuss for my third project is: Compare and contrast elements of two different texts. For example, explore the similarities and differences between two characters in the texts, or examine how one theme is handled in similar and dissimilar ways in two different texts. This prompt is asking me to pick two different stories and then examine how they are similar and different and more the elements such as character, setting or theme are similar and different in the two stories.  The readings for this prompt I will use is going to be Vietnam Eazy by Trami Cron and the story About-the-House-Girl in The Literature of California. Different elements of the theme in the two stories will be discussed. I will further discuss how the main characters in the two stories have similar upbringings with both their individual cultures that impact their lives and influences what happens to them. Another similarity between the two stories I will discuss is how the mother or mother figures in their lives want to protect them from others, especially boys. In tramis case, she had very strict rules when it came to boys and while it may seem stern and harsh of the mother, the understanding of their cultural background and customs allows the reader to understand the action of the characters. In the story of the house girl Ifapi’s aunt who is like a mother to her has a different way of protecting her, making her seem ill to not have interactions with others and when Patapir, the boy who is interested in her, wants to see her the aunt becomes very protective of Ifapi, once the reader is aware of the cultural background there is a part of it makes more sense has to why the aunt has acted the way she did. I will also discuss about how their cultures impact them in different ways, more so how a common theme plays out differently in both stories. Also will discuss how both characters in both stories deal with their emotions differently, Trami has to hid and bury them, while Patapir expresses them will no worry of others may think, it is their cultural differences that play a role in this.

Thesis- Trami Cron in the Book Vietnam Eazy and Patapir and Ifpi in the story About the House Girl  go through and handle different events in life at time similarly and differently to due to their cultural background and upbrings which influence their actions and others around them in their day to day life.

Quotes-  “ Ifapi turned toward him; but before she could speak, her aunt saw what he was doing and spoke up sharply. “ Do not touch her, “ (46)
Patapir had wanted to take Ifapi away to marry her but her aunt became very protective. - cultural background coming into play with patapir wanting to be with Ifapi at first glance.

“ Do not worry Aunty. I am taking her with me and I am marrying her - tonight.” (47) - The difference in the way the mother figures come to term with accepting events that have happened or are going to happen in their child's lives. The Aunt of Ifapi came to acceptance and approval of her being with Patapir. In Vietnam Eazy the mother of Trami would not give up on her strict rules and expectations of her daughter.

" It was muted beneath years of practice to suppress any extreme emotion" (Trami 83) - Apart of Vietnamese culture to suppress emotions and not express them.

" I was so well trained to retain my composure at all times" ( Trami 83)

  1. Hi Grace!

"About the House Girl" has been one of my favorite stories of the semester. I have really enjoyed the different points of view so many of our classmates have approached the story and used it within their projects to compare and contrast with other stories. I am very much looking forward to seeing how you entwine "About the House Girl" with "Vietnam Eazy". It seems as if it may be easier to locate supporting text with "About the House Girl" and I know that is just the very first ideas being expressed, but make sure you have a balance among the two stories and their supporting text and information.

  2. Happy Monday Grace!
I really enjoyed reading your project planning. I really like how you are focusing on the cultures of the characters and how that plays a major role in the stories and the character’s lives. I agree that different cultures have different beliefs and expectations and although an outsider might not understand or agree, it makes a lot of sense for the characters and their culture. How a person is raised and the cultural influences are a huge role in their lives and up bringing. I like the quotes you used and think they will be very helpful in supporting your thoughts and ideas. “About the House Girl” was one of my favorite stories this semester and really enjoyed how you are giving examples of how her aunt is her mother figure for her and how her culture plays a large role. I can’t wait to read your final project. Great job.
